A full day of work on the basement today

Jenny had places to be today so I started before she left and stopped just before she got back this evening.  Put in just over 8 hours on the basement.  Man I am feeling it now.

I can’t even remember what I worked on this morning.  I preped a few walls for paint and finished up painting any left over trim.  Patched up a few spots on the walls and also a few spots on the stairs so I can install the handrail after it has been repainted.  I plan to put silver hardware on instead of the gold that we used to have.  The french doors are all finished and i have taken the plastic off the windows.  Man that took about 30 minutes to get all of that off.  Mounted a few door stops so the doors do not hit the drywall anymore.

I finished off one 5 gallon bucket of paint and about 1 more gallon of the second 5 gallon bucket today.  That took most of the day.  I put the second coat of paint on the main room and office.  I will need to go back and touch up so of the baseboard trim and a few spots on the ceiling but those two rooms are almost ready for carpet now.  I plan to touch up tomorrow and finish the stairs and hallway paint also.  The stairs and hallway area just need to be touched up and that should be it for that area.

I probably will not get to laying out the tiles in the bathroom tomorrow.  I think I will plan to touch everything up and try to clear both rooms out and clean the floor so I am ready for the installer to come out and install carpet.

Next week I will start laying out the tile and by next weekend I hope to have everything finished in the bathroom.  At that point the only thing I can think of woud be getting the mirror for over the sink in the bathroom.  Moving the light over the sink in the bathroom so it is centered over the sink, and getting the toilet and installing it in the bathroom after the tile is finished.

I finished getting the screen mounted today.  Fitted it and then took it down before I painted.  I can now just put it up and that will be finished also.  No fitting and measuring.  Just put the mounts back up and then place the screen back in them and screw it on.

After I finish up a few things tomorrow I plan to take some pictures of everything.  That might be the last set of pictures of the main room before carpeting.

Have not accomplished as much as I wanted to this week

I did not get as far as I had wanted to this week.  I have gotten part of what I wanted to do finished though.  Earlier this week I finished paint all of the trim and the door in the bathroom.  The door is hung and bathroom is ready for tile.

I have also finished all of the trim in the office.  I have finished all of the trim in the main room and have one side of the doors painted.  I still have the trim in the hallway to finish and the other side of the doors to do.  I hope to get that tonight so I can hang the doors tomorrow and be finished will the white paint.  I want to paint the hand railing quick before I put the paint away.

After all of the trim painting is finished tonight, I plan to pull out the big roller and wall paint and get going on painting the walls again.  I have a bit more touch up to do on a few areas before I can finish the wall paint but I hope to have that complete by the end of the weekend.

I have all measurements made on the tiling layout.  I would like to have all the chalk lines down in the bathroom and be ready to start laying tile early next week.

I still need to find a mirror for the bathroom and that I believe is in on the rest of things I need to do before the basement is ready for carpet.  I will start to clean things up and get all of the tools out of the areas that are going to be carpeted.  I hope the carpet can be installed in the next few weeks.

Monday morning

Well I am a bit sore for working on the trim yesterday. Hopefully by this evening the soreness will be mostly gone because I would like to get back at it and get all of the trim painted in the basement. It will be a long evening but I think I can do it in about 2 hours. Once the trim looks good I will plan on taping it all off and then I will paint the walls the second and final coat. I want to take a light and go over all of the walls and make sure I have touched up everything I think needed before I put the last coat up. I started to mount the projector screen last night and jenny stopped me when I was almost ready to put it up. She brought up the fact that I was going to paint the walls again. I would have to take it back down so I decided I would leave it down for now. What would I do with out her?

The sink in the bathroom looks very nice. Caulk is drying nicely and you can’t even see it once it turns clear. I need to take measurements so I can go pick out a mirror for over the sink (I totally forgot about that item). I was busy laying out the tile last night and trying to figure out the layout I want. The tiles ended up being great. Each tile with a 1/4 inch grout space on either side works out to be 1 foot, this will make it nice and easy to lay out a chalk grid on the floor before I lay the tiles out. I hope I can keep this pace up so I can finish most of the details up this week and next. After that it is just waiting for the carpet. I will probably end up cleaning the floor and making sure everything is ready for the carpet. I may even start to hang stuff on the walls so the day the carpet is installed we can move furniture into the room and start to enjoy using it. I will probably have to wait to order the projector one more month since the carpet will be a big expense right now. Just trying to make things managable and not take on any more expenses than needed. With a 400 dollar rebate I may have to over do it just this one time though.

A very long day

I was able to get all of the trim all set and ready for the final coat of paint. I have touched up all of the fine gaps and everything so it looks much better than when I first put the baseboard trim down. The bathroom will be ready for tile on the floor after I paint the trim. I plan to paint the trim this week and then put a final coat of paint on the walls also. If all goes as planned I will be all finished on the trim and walls by the end of the week and will have the tiles laid out and maybe even started.

After the tile is down I can’t think of anything else I need to work on to get ready for the carpet installation. I will call and order the carpet next week. I have to pick one more item up for the tile in the bathroom and I think that might be it as far as things I need for the basement.

The end is getting closer every day.

Finished a few things on the bathroom in the basement today

I started working on getting all of the plumbing in the bathroom finished up. I thought I had everything I needed to finish up the sink install. I ended up needing to get a short extention for the drain. At the same time I picked up all the install tools I believe I will need, the tiles I need and the thin-set and grout I need to finish the bathroom floor. Didn’t cost as much as I thought it would but still a bit of money. I now have the tools I need to tile though. Now that the sink has been finished and is in place. I can finish up the baseboard trim tomorrow and then start the layout of the tiles. If I have enough time I may even mix up some thin-set and start to tile. I believe I can lay all the tile in the bathroom exept two or three pieces that I will have to take to home depot to get cut. I do not have the tools to cut around a corner. I have tools to cut around the toilet flange and straight cuts. I also need to pick up a peice that goes across the door as a transition to the carpet. In the next few weeks I will need to pick up a toilet also. I have a finalized quote for the carpet and pading also. I will call next week or the following week to order the carpet and let the installer know it is on order. I hope in the next few weeks I will be able to finish all the small details and get another coat of paint on everything. I am glad I have running water in that bathroom now. I laid a few tiles in the bathroom tonight and they actually look pretty good. We went with a darker grey grout. It will be my first tiling job but I hope with the correct tools it will look very good.

Had a 3rd carpet installer out to bid on the basement install

I was very happy with the guy that came out yesterday to bid on the installation of the carpet in the basement. He only does carpet and I have the best feeling about this guy. He had a good suggestion for the transition from the bathroom to the main room. He was in the middle as far as the price of installtion goes. That was more than made up for in the price of the carpet. His quote had about 120 sq ft less than the others. When you pay by the sq ft it adds up quickly. I will take the carpet samples back soon and will talk about final price for carpet and pad at the carpet store.

Wow, it has been 3 years since I started playing around with my blog

It has been that long. I can believe it. Of course I have gone no where with it, but it has been 3 years. I will have to get some stats up soon to summarize what this blog has been through. Things like number of post, words, comments etc.

New pictures and bit more work finished on the basement

Last night I worked on the last two windows a little bit more. I had two tricky peices to cut for those windows. Everything turned out looking ok. I had to rip the top two peices of trim because they were so close to the ceiling. Tonight I think I will relax and then get back to it tomorrow. I have a few spots I want to fill with wood filler and some cauk and then I will be working on taping off everything so I can get the last coat of paint on the trim. That will keep me busy for the rest of the week I would expect. Here are the updated pictures.

Thought I had a few updated pictures of the basement to post today

Well I was wrong. I took a few of taylor but did not take any of the basement. I will take a few tonight after I work on getting a few things finished up. I am debating on picking up and power hand planer at lunch. Still thinking about it. I need to either sand or plane down a section of one of the peices of wood I put up around the one window in the basement. I need to do this before I can finish trimming out the window. A sander wil do the job but a planer will make the job go much faster and I have been thinking about getting one anyway. I may have to bit the bullet and pick one up today.

Finally made it down to the basement this afternoon

Made it down and started working on filling all the nail holes in the trim. I was able to finish the trim around the door in the bathroom and one wall in the bathroom. I have one other small peice of baseboard molding to put up. I have to get the sink and cabinet in it’s final place and all set before I put the last molding in tough. All corners and holes have been filled so I will wait for that to set up and go back over everything with sand paper before I put another coat of paint on the trim. I got the two windows in the main room started. I want to let the cauck and wood filler dry and setup before I put the last of the window trim up. I may go down tonight to finish that last bit up trim up. I may be able to setup and get everything read for the final coat of paint on the trim tomorrow. Probably won’t get to painting tomorrow, but I probably will be able to prep everything so I can get painting on tuesday.
