First Snow of the year

Man we got about 3 to 5 inches of snow yesterday. It will all be melted today though. Roads were horrible driving home from work. Found out that there was a big accident on 94 last night. They were routing alot of traffic down one of the main streets near me. That made a long trip to eat dinner last night. Roads were almost all ice when we headed out and were salted finally when we headed home. Jenny was able to find one more box of icicle lights yesterday. I hope to be able to get most of those up tonight. I am going to have to run one more extension cord to handle the extra strings of lights. I think we are going to need to get one more string of lights though. Tonight when I put the rest up we will know if we need more lights or not. Should look pretty good to. I have them on x10 this year also. No need to plug and unplug cables anymore. I might go and put lights in our trees in the front yard also. Not sure if I should do that or not. Maybe.

Much needed relaxing weekend

Well we had a good day sat. With my college roommate and his wife. Saw the movie elf, was very funny. Sunday we did what we never thought we would do. Put up most of the outside christmas lights. We saw the neighbors putting some of theirs up and said why not. It is a beautiful day and we are not going to have another nice one like it this whole week probably. We will plan to put up the tree on friday but yesterday we got most of the outside lights up. We bought a whole bunch of icicle lights for the roof last year. We put most of those up. Had one box left and still wanted to do the edge of the roof over the garage. So we headed back out to see if we could find anymore boxes of lights. Did find two more. We need 2 or 3 more boxes probably. Jenny will check on those today. Might be able to finish that up tonight then. IN all we have 5 strings of lights with greenery around the front porch and I think 7 icicle strings up right now. I think I will have to plug the lights into at least two plugs this year. Not just one.

Well, taylor had her one year vet visit

Everything went great. She is a good weight and the vet didn’t find anything wrong with her. We had brought up that she scratches at her ears a bit. So he told us to put her on benedryl and gave us something to put in her ears twice a day. She seems to be doing a bit better now. We bought her a new feeding station as they call it. Puts the water bowl and food bowl at a higher spot so it is better for her while she eats. Has no problem drinking from it but doesn’t really like eating from it as of yet. I take the bowl out so she will eat the food. She has eaten out of the food bowl once so far out of 4 meals. She will warm up to is soon. Just a bit different. The benedryl seems to have a little affect on her but not much. She still went nuts yesterday afternoon. Had alot of energy to get rid of.

Data Cables have been punched down and tested

Well, spent a few hours yesterday working on the basement wiring. I started mounting the punchdown blocks and switch. Punched down the first cable and found out that every jack I punched down in the rooms was to the wrong standard. I punched down to standard B not A and my punchdown blocks are to the A standard. So I fixed the jacks and then punched down all 20 cables to the punchdown blocks. Tested the cables with a cheap cable tester I have and then also tested a few with our notebook to make sure it worked. All seem to be fine. I want to run two more sets of cable over where the bar will go. And run a few cables 3 or 4 to the upstairs rooms and then I think I will be cabled enough for any future needs. I will then need to get all of the coax cleaned up and all set. Glad that I finished the existing data cables though. Switched all of the cables to be rj45 not rj11. At most jacks I had 1 rj45 and one rj11. Now all the basement jacks are rj45, I can plug a phone cable into them if I need to. Probably will do the same upstairs also. Will setup one punchdown block for just phone then. Will jumper the phone to all the jacks on the block and then I can just patch phone signal to any jack in the house if I need it there.

Knobs on cabinets all set

So I finally started to mount the knobs on the new cabinets last night. So that is all finished now. Can move on to the cabling in the basement. Since christmas is coming up I doubt I will be getting to much more for the basement anytime soon. We will be spending on christmas presents for the next month or so. I do have enough to keep me busy on the basement for awhile. I really would like to get all of the network cables terminated and all tested out. I have such a mess in the office right now. I want to get some of that moved downstairs.

Got alot done this weekend

Went out and bought two more cabinets for the laundry room. That room if finished now. Actually I have to put the nobs and handle on the cabinets. Didn’t do that yet. I have them, just didn’t take the time this weekend to do that yet. Maybe I will get to it tonight. So that room looks much better now and we have plenty of storage and a place to put things when we come in the house. Put new pads on the front of the jeep. I was so sick of the pads I put on awhile ago that I finally went out and got OEM pads for the front also. Put those on sat. and no more squeaking. So a lesson learned, never buy semi-matallic pads, they squeak something fierce. Buy the expensive OEM pads and you will be happy, hopefully my brake dust problem will be fixed with this also. Mowed the lawn one last time on saturday. Put the lawnmower away for the season. If we get a warm day soon I might take it apart and grease it up and change the oil and plug. Things should be ready for winter in the garage now. Changed the oil in the car sunday and aired up the tires and filled all the liquids. Just have to wash and wax this week and the car should be ready for winter. Hopefully we can have no more car work or problems for the whole winter. I think now that pretty much everything else if finished that I can do outside I can work on putting together the new firewall box and get that up and running (want to host my mysql on that box instead of my other server). The other server is almost ready to be replaced also. Have the new DVD burner in the new server and just have to mover files and get the webserver all setup on it. Then I can make the swap. After that I want to clean the office and start bringing stuff downstairs so we can get office furniture into the office and jenny can decorate it how she would like it. I want to finish up the wiring in the basement and get all of the runs cleaned up and finalized. Then I can get the doors I want for the basement and finish insulating and go out and get the big load of drywall. I have to get the bathroom fixtures and stuff in before I finish the door and drywall to the bathroom though. I am going to have to take that wall down to get the shower and cabinets in for the downstairs bathroom. Might be able to get some money set aside for that room here in a few months. Before I know it, it will be time to start on the yard again. Want to get the grass coming in full in the spring and finish up on the sprinkler system and then put two landscape areas in, in the front yard. Then the door on the back of the garage and a screen door on the front door and lights for the backyard. Then I think it will be time to move 🙂 Just kidding. But what else is there to do on a new house?

Well we caved

Jenny and I went out and bought a new phone system. Actually it is a base unit and one extention. We bought an extra one also. It is a 5.8gig phone this time. I will be ebaying my old siemens phone system unless someone speaks up with a decient offer. I have 2 base stations and 5 hand sets. Hopefully this new phone will work out. Spent a bit on it but seems to work great so far. Letting them charge right now so really haven’t used them much as of yet. They have a cool phone that I can put on this system also that has a usb cable that we can load pictures into the phone with so when people call it will pop their picture up on a color screen. Not sure if I will get that one or not. It is 20 bucks more than the standard unit.

Not much completed lately

Last night I did get the new switch and patch panel setup and ready to mount. I had to modify a 2U wall mount rack a bit so I can get the new switch into it Got that all set and now just have to clear a spot for it on the wall in the basement so I can put it up. I think I am going to move a few things around though. I am going to put the freezer under the electical box and network wires and then put the shelving unit that is currently on that wall over where the freezer was. Think that will make things fit a bit better. Going to move the stereo out and tv also. Soon I will have all the connection up and running so we can hook that tv up in another area of the basement for the time being. If I feel up to it I want to get all of the accomplished tonight. Then just have the two network runs that I want to redo for the livng room and bedroom. Man am I moving slow on this thing.

Organized and labeled all data wiring

Had my old roommate up this past weekend and we worked on finishing up some of the cable organization for all the data cables. I can’t remember how many cables I pulled and have hanging in the utility room. There are a whole bunch. My old roommate kept saying it looks like we are in a companies utility room not a house. Got ever coax (7) and every cat 5e(8) and every cat6e(8) labeled and pulled into the socket and the data jacks hooked up and all screwed into the wall plates. I want to run two more runs to the bar area, but probably will not do that for a bit. I want to clean up the cables I have run already and get those punched down and tested. I hope to get that done this week if I find the time. I then want to run one more cable to the upstairs near the kitchen and then permanently wire the two cables I ran earlier this year to my two replaytvs, one in the living room and one in our bedroom. After I get those in the wall instead of coming up vents, I can then move my computers downstairs and start getting jenny’s office upstairs read for some paint and furniture.
