Start of the week went a bit different than expected

Well, my brother had a medical emergency and everything is fine now. Ended up taking yesterday off work to make sue he was ok and to do anything I could if needed. I ended up staying at home for most of the morning. Went down and working on the office a bit (plugs and what not). Cleaned up the bathroom a bit and then painted the rest of the utility room and almost all of the bathroom. I ran out of paint so last night I got another gallon of paint and will finish up the last wall in the bathroom tonight. I would like to put the light up in the bathroom and then move on to the main room. I am so far on track with my plans this week. I hope to organize the utility room and get things back to their places. I will then move everything I can from the main room into the utility room (tools and what not ie table saw) and move all the furniture into the office and then put plastic up in the doorway so I do not get that room dusty. If I still have time I would like to start on cleaning up the corners in the main room so I can touch up anything with mud and then sand the last few spots tomorrow so I can get priming that room.

I was able to mow the law last night. Lowered the mow one setting. I plan to lower it one more by the end of the season just to keep the grass as low as possible over the winter. I still need to winterize the sprinkler system. I may get to that this weekend.

It is nice to be able to stay close to my schedule I have setup for this week and next week. If I can keep at it I plan on having the main room ceiling textured and painted by monday. After that I can start on the walls. The ceiling and walls in the main room should go pretty quick. It is a nice open area and I have that nice big roller (18 inch roller) which makes painting go so fast.

Server in new case

Today I finally got around to moving my main computer/server into its new case. I have had the case for well over a year. I thought I would put new hardware in it but since I have not gotten any new hardware as of yet I put my existing setup in it. I will eventually deck it out with new hardware but tought it would be good to put the 5 hard drives I have in a case that will keep them a bit cooler.

I did not do much on the basement at all today. Just looked at it really.

Paint color has been finalized

Went to home depot satruday afternoon. With the mail-in rebate offered with gliden paint, we decided to go with gliden evermore paint. We have a total of 4 1 gallon buckets of ceiling paint and 2 5 gallon buckets of wall paint. We went with a light tan color called water chestnut. It looked a lot lighter on the sample chip. It went on the wall very dark and seems to have dried over night much lighter. I was a bit worried after I finished the room last night. It looks much brighter this morning. The office is ready for outlet covers and trim work now. I will start moving stuff back into that room so I can start on the finish work in the main room. I will leave room around the window so I can work on trimming out the window in the office. I have moved things around in the utility room and plan to move a bit more so I can finish painting that room either later tonight or tomorrow after work. The bathroom is almost ready for paint on the walls. We are going with the same light grey that I painted the utility room. I just need to work at the area around the shower a bit more before I paint that room. So far we have spent between $300 and $400 on paint and primer. That is for the garage and basement. I need to start looking at trim/molding for the base of the walls and around the window/doors this week. I have no idea how much that will be. I would assume it will be another $200 to $300 at least. I will take some measurements to get an estimate of how much I will need and then head out to see what is available and see if I can try to use someones truck to get it to my house. I also need to take measurements of all the areas I want to carpet and tile so we can go pick out flooring and get that on order and then find a good installer at the same time.

Nothing new on the basement project.

As I planned, I went to homedepot right after work and picked up one more can of paint for the utility room and 3 cans of ceiling paint. Homedepot has a mail-in rebate on all gliden paint right now so instead of almost 17 bucks a gallon it will only be 12 bucks a gallon. I picked up some color chips at the same time so we can pick the wall paint out. Since gliden paint has that mail in rebate I am thinking about picking up some gliden chips instead of behr and purchasing a few 5 gallon buckets of gliden instead of the behr paint. You get a 20 buck rebate on the 5 gallon bucket. That will make the paint much cheaper. I need to purchase the paint today or tomorrow I believe. Will try to get that decided and purchased soon.

After I stopped at homdepot I came home and mowed the yard. I did not paint anything in the basement, as planned. I did however go down and install the fan in the office. I do not think it is quite right yet (does not swing free). I think I may need to take it down again and free up the hook inside the mount that is there to help hold the fan up when you are working on the wiring. I think I will just unhook that and fold it down and that should fix the problem. It does give a nice breeze in that room when turned on. I think I will go get a wall knob/switch so I can control the speed of the fan from the wall instead of the fan pull chain.

Tonight I hope to move everything back to it’s correct spot in the utility room so I can move everything from the other side of the room out and finish painting that room. If time permits I can move everything and then paint that room. It will be nice to be finished with that room and get things organized and also move stuff from the main room into the utility room and also store the deck chairs and table somewhere. After I finish the garage project and basement project I hope to get back to the utility room. I think I will clean the floor up and paint it with the epoxy system I used in the garage. The grey basement system/paint should look great. I think after I do that I will put some of that vinyl molding at the base of the walls to finish that room off and it should look great and be very easy to clean up. That room should not get to dirty, but since I am plannig on building some furniture I think it will get a decient amount of saw dust so the finished floor will make it easy to keep clean. I still need to figure out how I want to layout that area so I can keep it nice an organized but be able to pull things like the table saw out and use.

Still on track with the basement

Last night I came home from work and let the dog out and played around with her in the backyard for a bit. I then when down stairs and setup stuff to get going on the bathroom. I was able to finish priming the bathroom and cleaned everything up. I setup and get everything ready in the office so I could paint the ceiling with a final coat after dinner. Jen got home at about 7:40 from work and we ate dinner. Cleaned up after dinner and went back down to get the ceiling painted. I had put a fan on in the office in hopes of drying the primer on the ceiling fast. I started on the ceiling in the office and that turned out great. I looked in the bathroom and the ceiling was dry so I moved in there and finished up the ceiling in the bathroom. Lucky, I had just about a 1/4 inch of paint left in the gallon bucket of ceiling paint. I plan to go and get paint today after work. This morning I went down to see how the ceiling turned out. I am happy with the end product. I put the can lights together in the office and turned them on and it looks great. I put the ceiling light/fan together in the bathroom and it works great. After I paint the walls in the bathroom I have one other light fixture to put up.

Tonight after work I have to go pick up some mail and then i am off to get 3 gallons of ceiling paint and one more gallon of paint to finish up the utility room and a few color samples so we can decide on what color we are going to put up on all of the walls for the rest of the basement.

I do not plan to do anything on the basement tonight. I want to try to trim and mow the lawn tonight and that will proably be it. My back is hurting a bit from painting last night and I have a few shows on the replaytv I want to catch up on.

All for now.

Painted for a few hours last night

I cleaned up the floor in the office and bathroom. Had to scape mud off the floor and then used the shop vac to get most of the just up. I still need to clean the show up and the window in the office. I am ready to paint the office ceiling and walls. I am ready to prime the bathroom (plan to get to that tonight). I hope to prime the bathroom and paint the ceiling in the office tonight. Last night I painted 2 of the 4 areas in the utility room. Painted that mostly to see if we like the paint we picked out. It may be a bit to white. May end up going for more of a tan than white/grey. It is a good color for the utility room though. Will end up getting at least one more gallon to finish that room up. Will need to decide what color to paint garage and rest of basement though. Tonight if time permits I would like to do the painting mentioned above and also move things back into position in the utility room so I can continue painting the rest of the utility room later this week. After I finish painting that room I need to get shelves mounted on the wall again, may even get a few more shelves made to mount on another wall in the utility room. I have enough for one wall right now. I may have enough material (will need to cut it still) to put shelves on one or two other walls. I will need to go get more brackets to mount the shelves to the wall with. Hope to keep this momentum going. By the end of this week I hope to have ceiling painted in both the office and bathroom so I can put fan and lights up in office and put fan/light back up in the bathroom and have that finished also. I want to finish painting the utility room and get that partially organized and looking ok. Move most of the stuff in the main room into the utility room or office and then put plastic up in that door way so dust will not make it into the office area. I can then finish the corners in the main room and then hopefully prime the ceiling and walls and then spray the ceiling in the main room this weekend or early next week. At that point I will be close to the end product. It will be looking like a finished room at that time. I can clean the main room floor at that time and think about the trim I want to get. I can finish triming out the 2 windows in the main room and the 1 window in the office. When the windows are trimed out the main room and office will be looking great I think. If I can have the office and bathroom finished up with paint by next week and have the main room primed and ceiling painted I will be feeling great. Really need to figure out and purchase paint we want for bathroom, office and main room. I know what ceiling paint we will be using. I guess I can get more of that and more paint for the utility room no matter what. List of items needed from homedepot. More paint for ceiling (5 gallon bucket if possible), one more gallon of paint for utility room, one more 5 gallon bucket of mud for ceiling texture, maybe one more 5 gallon bucket of primer, pick color for basement and get 2 5 gallon buckets and pick color for garage and get 1 5 gallon bucket. That will set us back about 400 bucks probably.

Busy night last night

Went out to get a few things and have dinner right after work. As soon as we got home I headed outside to mow. It was dark before I finished mowing the backyard. Hopefully I did not miss anything. After I cleaned up a bit I headed down stairs and sanded all of the over spray off the walls in the bathroom and cleaned up the corners around the ceiling. I then moved on to the office and cleaned all of the corners up and sanded any over spray off the walls.

Tonight I need to clean up the shower and make sure all coners around the shower are set and ready for primer. I then need to clean up the window in the office because of over spray. I would like to paint the ceiling in the office and hope to have time to prime the whole bathroom. I need to paint at least a full wall with the paint we picked out for the basement. I want to see how it looks on a full wall before I go get a 5 gallon bucket. Want to make sure it is the color we like before the whole basement has been painted. So far I am on track and getting stuff completed in the basement. I need to eventually get back to the utility room and garage to get a coat paint on and see if it will need a second coat. I hope to be able to just put one thick coat of paint everywhere I am painting. That will save on extra time and cost to put a second coat up. I will know more after I paint a full wall tonight to check out the color.

Fun, event full, productive weekend

After a suprise friday evening and a full day saturday. Jenny and I relaxed for a bit on sunday and watched a new movie I have been waiting for since I heard about it, Serinity. Was a great movie. I enjoy watching Firefly which is the weekly show Serinity is a continuation of. Firefly is on the Scifi channel every friday at 7pm. I replay the show normally and watch it over the weekend sometime. The movie was just as good if not better than the the show. After we got home we started on a few things around the house. At about 6 or so I decieded I would head down stairs to work on the ceiling of the office and bathroom. I preped everything I thought needed work and then got the mud thined and ran the air hose into the office. Hooked everything up and turned on the flood lights and started to make a mess. I finished up spraying the ceiling in the office and bathroom about 7:30 and started cleaning all the equipment up and then by about 8:30 sat down to watch a few shows with jenny before we went to bed. Not much down time over the weekend but I did spray the ceiling like I wanted to.

I plan to clean stuff up in those two rooms tonight. Depending on the weather I hope to put the final coat of paint on the ceiling in both rooms by wed. and get all lighting back up in the office and install the light/fan in the bathroom. I hope to get the office walls painted their final coat of paint wed evening. That room should be ready for trim and carpet by the end of the week.

I need to pick a toilet out for the bathroom and also figure out what I will be doing on the back corner of the bathroom. At this point I am thinking I will leave it alone and finish that area later. Just finish it with trim and flooring right now and then put a cabinet (made by me) or put up a small wall and door there to make a closet for towels and stuff. Right now I want to pick flooring out and get that in so I can put in the sink and cabinet and toilet so we can start using that as soon as the rest of the basement gets finished. As soon as I finalize those two rooms I can move everything into the office and then continue on the main room. It is pretty much ready for primer at this point. After that I will spray the ceiling and then clean up again and put the last coat of paint on walls and ceiling. The end of this 3 or 4 year project is getting close. It will be time to pick out carpet and the new projector hopefully soon. Maybe even in the next month or two. I just need to keep this momentum moving. If I stay at it I may be able to have the main room ceiling sprayed by the end of next week.

I will need to pick up a 5 gallon bucket of wall paint this week and I probably will get a few 1 gallon cans of ceiling paint. It depends on how fast I use the one gallon can I have already. If it gets used up fast I probably will get a 5 gallon bucket of ceiling paint also. I also need to get one more 5 gallon bucket of general purpose mud to finish spraying the ceiling with. Hopefully one more bucket will be all I need to finish the ceiling with. I went through a bit more than I thought I would last night with the two rooms. I will probably need about twice as much to finish the big room. I have about a half bucket left. I figure another full bucket will be more than enough.

Moved the blog

Since I was having some problems with one of the servers I have moved the blog to a new home. I have not moved the msql part yet though. I am contemplating moving all mysql db’s over to another server also. I want them all on one. Then I have an easy backup routine and they will all be happy also. I may move everything over to the new server tonight. Did not get around to putting hardware in the new case. I am thinking about new hardware in the new case. After all the old server is about 5 or 6 years old now and it may be time to get some new stuff anyway.

Got everything done last night I wanted to

Since it looks like it will rain pretty much everyday the rest of this week I decided I needed to get out and mow the yard since it was pretty long already. Got that done and then went down and worked on a few spots in the basement and then came up to the garage to fix a few seams on the ceiling. They look ok this morning but I have a little bit more to touch up tonight I believe. Good new is the office looks great now. I am ready to spray the ceiling. The bathroom was touched up a bit last night. I want to try to sand it tonight so I can prime yet this week and then spray the ceiling this weekend. I have paint to paint the ceiling as soon as I spray it. I also might have enough paint to put one coat on the walls in the office and bathroom. Hopefully next week I can move the sink into the bathroom to give it a test fit before I get flooring down. Moving along, just slow like always.
